TVS (Transient Voltage Suppressor) diodes provide protection against voltage transients caused by induced lightning, electrostatic discharge, and other voltage spikes. Utilizing a combination of PN junction diode architecture and avalanche breakdown effect, these diodes have significant power handling and voltage clamping capabilities. SMCJ78A-E3/9AT is one such TVS diode, which offers protection against surge pulses up to 10A and up to 8.2kW peak pulse power.

SMCJ78A-E3/9AT application field and working principle

The SMCJ78A-E3/9AT is a unidirectional device, designed for bidirectional applications with two discrete devices. This device is comprised of a pair of Zener protected PN junction diodes. The circuit is optimized to provide maximum surge current protection with very low local circuit capacitance. The low capacitance ensures fast response time, essential for protecting sensitive components and circuits.
