The SMCJ8.0A is a TVS (Transient Voltage Suppressor) diode used mainly for protecting sensitive electronic components from abrupt voltage transients when an external surge or electrostatic discharge is applied on the circuit components. TVS transients are designed to provide a much quicker response to pins in comparison to other clamping circuitries. Therefore, they are widely used in the protection of telecommunication and computer equipment.
SMCJ8.0A is a two-line diode device, where each line consists of a series of matched diodes. This device provides dual-line protection with regard to transient voltage threats. It features an operating temperature range between -65°C and 175°C, a voltage standoff of 8V and a peak pulse power dissipation of 600W. It is available in a DO-214 package with dimensions of 2.59 mm in width, 2.59 mm in length and 2.20 mm in height.
The working principle of the SMCJ8.0A device is quite simple. The lines are connected in series with the respect to the transient voltage source and electrolytic capacitor. When an abrupt voltage transient occurs, the device works to observe the voltage on each line and quickly dissipate the excess energy of the transient. The device has a clamping voltage of 8V, meaning that the output voltage of the device can never exceed 8V regardless of the applied transient voltage. This maximizes the protection afforded to the sensitive device components.
