TVS Diodes are protective components used to protect sensitive electronic circuits and components, such as semiconductors, from electrical overstress caused by transient voltage or surge events. The basic operating principle of the SMDA03CE3/TR7 is that when a transient voltage passes the stand-off voltage on the anode terminal, the SMD begins conducting current, thus limiting the voltage on the anode terminal to the rated stand-off voltage and dissipating the current surge. The device does not block low level signals i.e. below its breakdown voltage.

As soon as the transient is over, the SMD switches off and blocks the passage of current, thereby protecting the sensitive circuit from damage. This is the reason why the SMD is known as the Transient Voltage Suppressor (TVS).

The peak pulse current capability of the SMDA03CE3/TR7 is 6A while its peak power dissipation is 61W. It has an operating temperature range of -40 to 150 degree Celsius, and can handle transients up to 8kV/us.
