SMF22A is a kind of TVS - diode with excellent performance and precise protection capabilities. It is mainly applied to protect sensitive electronic equipment from surge and pulse voltage caused by lightning, electromagnetic interference (EMI), electrostatic discharge (ESD), inductive switching and nearby high voltage discharges, and so on. Its distinctive features include fast response to the surge or pulse current and high peak pulse capability.
The working principle of SMF22A mainly relies on its diode structure. The device is mainly composed of two cathode electrodes and one anode layer. When the positive transient voltage appears in the circuit, the anode layer is charged to a certain voltage, and its electric potential is lower than the cathode electrode. Then, the electrons are attracted and run from the anode layer to the cathode electrode. In this way, electrons form an electron flow path and the excess voltage can be absorbed by these electrons. This is the center of the SMF22A working principle.
The SMF22A devices have applications in various fields. The main ones include communication networks, broadcasting receivers, cable TV systems, switching power supplies, computers, telecommunication equipment, home appliance/electronic games, digital cameras, cell phones, DVD and VCD players, multi-function printers, and AC/DC adaptors. In these applications, the device is usually used to suppress the surge voltage or pulse current generated by these appliances.
When it comes to design considerations, there are several main parameters that should be taken into consideration. These parameters include peak pulse power rating, peak pulse current rating, their respective values on voltage and current, and clamp voltage. The peak pulse power rating indicates the withstand of the device to the surge current. Peak pulse current rating defines the maximum peak current the device can be exposed to. The voltage and current values represent the voltage drop across the device under a certain current load. The clamp voltage indicates the clamp voltage that the device can withstand. All of these parameters shall be taken into consideration during the design of a rely system.
