Bidirectional Transil diodes like SMF6V0A-HE3-08 are widely used in automotive electronics, in particular, for in-rush current protection and spike protection for low voltage and low power applications. The SMF6V0A-HE3-08 is broadly used in automotive electronics, such as high-end automotive audio, automotive airbag modules, door electric control circuits, engine control units, powertrain control modules and car navigation systems.
The structure of the SMF6V0A-HE3-08 consists of two back-to-back Zener diodes that are interconnected to form a bidirectional protection circuit. The Zener diode has a negative temperature coefficient, which ensures a fast response time over a broad temperature range. The breakdown voltages of the two diodes are slightly different, resulting in a steep protection curve that means high clamping voltage with low leakage current and good handling of high-frequency noise and spikes.
In operation, when vin exceeds the designed breakdown voltage, Vbr, current will travel through the device in the opposite direction. The voltage across the diode rises quickly and reduces the current though it, this is called the clamping action. As the voltage continues to rise, the current will eventually reach a peak and then wane off as the diode begins to dissipate energy and releases it as heat.
The SMF6V0A-HE3-08 has a superior surge capability to protect against a broad range of transients with a fast response time. Its low leakage current and low temperature coefficient makes it an excellent choice for automotive applications where the requirements for surge protection can be highly demanding.
