Application Field of SMLJ10CA-TP

The SMLJ10CA-TP device is suitable for applications such as telecom power supplies, data-line surge protection, and personal computer external ports, including network equipment, Ethernet, USB, IEEE1394, and other digital controls. This device offers total breakdown voltage of 5.1V at a nominal current of 10A (8/20μs pulse).

Due to its higher breakdown voltage, the SMLJ10CA-TP diode is often employed in DC/DC converters and Li-Ion battery protection since it can withstand EMI/RFI without breakdown. In addition, this diode provides a very low clamping voltage, enabling it to manage transient spikes without putting excessive stress on the associated components.

Working Principle of SMLJ10CA-TP

TVS (transient voltage suppression) diodes are two-electrode semiconductor devices that are designed to stop an excessive amount of current from flowing into a system. This is accomplished by applying voltage across the two electrodes, causing a current to flow. This current then forces the electrodes to become reverse-biased, the diode turning off and preventing any further current from flowing.

The SMLJ10CA-TP diode is designed to effectively protect components connected to data and low voltage communications. It features a two-electrode structure with P-type and N-type semiconductor materials connected together. The P-type material is the cathode and the N-type is the anode. When the diode is under normal conditions, no current flows between the electrodes as the diode remains in itsoff-state. However, when the voltage across the anode and cathode exceed a certain threshold (the breakdown voltage), the diode turns on and current flows.

The SMLJ10CA-TP has a breakdown voltage of 5.1V and can withstand transients up to 8/20μs pulse. This is often accomplished by adding a Zener diode in series with the SMLJ10CA-TP diode. The Zener diode will quickly enter its breakdown region and act as a clamp, limiting the voltage and preventing it from exceeding the threshold.

The SMLJ10CA-TV is also designed with ESD (electrostatic discharge) protection, which is important for applications in digital data lines. ESD is an electric field created when two insulated objects come into contact and can cause permanent damage to sensitive circuitry.
