TVS - Diodes (transient voltage suppressors) are commonly used for overvoltage protection applications. The working principle of transient voltage suppressors or TVS diodes is based on the term "avalanche breakdown". Avalanche breakdown occur when a large current flow flows through a narrow junction. This result in the junction rapidly heating up and a large voltage drop across the junction which creates a “clamping” action to limit the voltage at the junction and reduce voltage transients.

The SMLJ30CA series of TVS diodes are best suited for applications such as power supply and battery protection, LED protection, breaker protection, automotive, and overvoltage protection applications. They are available in two configurations; standard (H) and auto reset (AR) which is designed to reset after a pulse. The standard version of the SMLJ30CA is designed to withstand a repetitive surge of up to 8 times the rated V(BR). The V(BR) or breakdown voltage of the device is the maximum voltage that can pass through the diode without causing permanent damage.
