The SMLJ11A is a high-quality, high-speed, uni-directional, low-capacitance diode that provides successful over-voltage protection in a wide variety of applications. It is designed to deliver a current 8x higher than competitive devices, with no degradation in its clamping characteristics.
The SMLJ11A is a quadruple Common Cathode (CC) diode, which means it offers the advantages of both the Single Diode and Common Cathode Mechanism(CCM). The Single Diode Mechanism (SDM) offers effective protection against transients above the breakdown voltage VBR, while the CCM provides enhanced protection against surges in the 100-200V range. Together, these mechanisms offer excellent protection against the ESD surges that are common in industrial and automotive environments.
The SMLJ11A can be used to protect both AC and DC systems. It is ideal for automotive, industrial, medical, consumer, military, and telecom applications. It has a low clamping voltage and fast response time of about 8ns, making it suitable for high-speed digital circuits. In addition, its low reverse leakage current and common cathode case provide excellent protection for pulsed signals such as those used in Ethernet ports.
The working principle of the SMLJ11A is as follows. When a transient voltage above the breakdown voltage VBR is applied across the diode, the electrical field inside the diode turns on the carrier generation-recombination process. When this happens, excess voltage becomes electrons, which then combine with the electrons stored within the diode junction. This type of barrier effect reduces the voltage across the diode. As the voltage across the diode decreases, the current passes through the junction decreases. This causes the voltage across the diode to quickly drop to a safe level.
The SMLJ11A is designed to provide protection against abnormal levels of voltage. It is capable of providing over-voltage protection for a variety of applications. Its high-speed response time and low clamping voltage make it ideal for use in high-speed digital circuits. Its common cathode case provides excellent protection for pulsed signals.
