SMLJ13CA is a fast transient voltage suppressor (TVS) diode typically used to protect sensitive circuit components against transient voltages. It is a double-channel diode TVS that offers a wide operating voltage range and is widely used in communication, instrumentation, automotive, power supply, aviation and other applications.The SMLJ13CA is a unidirectional TVS diode that works in two complementary channels in the series circuit. It is primarily designed to protect against voltage transients on an input line, and works by providing a low impedance path for current in the event of an over-voltage surge being applied.The SMLJ13CA can be divided into two major categories; unidirectional and bidirectional. Unidirectional TVS diodes are designed to protect circuits from voltage transients induced by lightning or other sources on a single-sided power supply line, while bidirectional TVS diodes are designed to protect circuits from transients induced by either lightning or other sources on both sides of the power supply. The SMLJ13CA is a unidirectional TVS diode.Unidirectional TVS diodes typically provide a clamping action against transient voltage rise, limiting the sudden peak overshoot of the voltage signal to a pre-determined level. The SMLJ13CA has a low reverse leakage current and excellent clamping capability of up to ±13V.When exposed to a voltage greater than the threshold voltage rating of the diode, the SMLJ13CA will clamp the voltage to the breakdown voltage (VBR) of the diode. The breakdown voltage is also known as the clamping voltage and is determined by the material of the diode. The breakdown voltage of the SMLJ13CA is 13 V for unidirectional devices and 7.8 V for bidirectional devices.In addition, the SMLJ13CA also offers a strong reverse transistor body diode (CBD) that allows for the clamping of input signals below the diode blocking voltage rating (Vb) of the device. The CBD helps to prevent the overvoltage condition while also providing a low-impedance path for the high frequency transients.The SMLJ13CA transient suppression diode also has a very low static operating failure rate (SOFR). The SOFR is an indication of the likelihood that the device will fail during no-signal (quiescent) operation. The lower the static operating failure rate, the more reliable and less likely the SMLJ13CA is to fail in the most demanding applications.Overall, the SMLJ13CA is a versatile, reliable and low cost TVS diode equipped with excellent current clamping capability and low static operating failure rate to help protect sensitive circuitry from transient voltage surges.
