Variable capacitance diode, also known as varicap or varactor diode, is a type of semiconductor device, which can serve as a voltage-controlled capacitor with a built-in tuned circuit. When the reverse bias voltage is applied to the diode, its capacitance varies according to the applied voltage. Its typical application fields include voltage-controlled oscillators (VCOs), mixers, frequency multipliers, and automatic gain control (AGC) circuits. The most common type of varactors is SMV1263-074LF, which has a reverse bias capacitance range of 10 to 500 pF, and a diode voltage range of 1.5 to 10 V.

The working principle of SMV1263-074LF-type varactors is rooted in the depletion effect, which occurs as the result of the formation of a space charge layer at the p-n junction. The opposite happens in the presence of a forward bias, since majority and minority carriers are forced to combine, thus reducing the depletion region and increasing the capacitance.

There are two major modes of operation of the SMV1263-074LF-type varactors: linear and nonlinear mode. In the linear mode, the capacitance variation is relatively linear with respect to the applied reverse bias voltage, making it ideal for applications such as AGC circuits and continuous tuning VCOs. In the nonlinear mode, the capacitance variation is much more rapid for decreasing reverse bias voltages, making it the perfect choice for frequency multipliers or high-resolution frequency dividers.

SMV1263-074LF-type varactors provide better linearity than fixed diameter tunnel diodes, and have a higher frequency range than pin diodes. The aforementioned characteristics make them suitable for a wide range of applications in Radio Frequency (RF) and microwave systems as frequency multipliers, frequency dividers, limiters and mixers. Moreover, their narrow area of variable capacitance allows designers to develop very compact circuits that can be highly efficient and precise.
