The SN65ELT20DR is a low-voltage, low-power logic translator resulting from the collaboration of Texas Instruments and National Semiconductor. It is a type of n-channel metal-oxide field-effect transistor (NMOS) IC. A logic translator is a device that bridges the gap, or translates, between the different voltage levels of two different digital system operating environments. It bridges the gap between two circuits that are VCC and either 2.5V, 3.3V, or 5V, allowing them to communicate with one another without issue. Level shifters and logic translators also reduce overall system power consumption.

The SN65ELT20DR’s main application area is with boards working in both 2.5V and 1.8V voltage levels. More specifically, it can be used to transition between two different logic families, such as two different CMOS families. It converts a 1.8V logic signal higher than the pullup voltage level of a 2.5V circuit, to a logic level that the 2.5V circuit can recognize. The voltage range of the logic input and outputs are 0.8V to 2.5V. It is ideal for situations where power consumption is critical and where it is necessary to control the current flow of low-power signals.

The SN65ELT20DR also features bidirectional data flow and open-drain capability. It can be used to convert inputs from one logic family to the other bi-directionally, or to convert logic family signal levels bi-directionally. Open-drain output enables a circuit to Sink Current, opening the signal that allows the voltage to drop to the low level. This can be necessary in some applications to efficiently control the output of current sources.

The SN65ELT20DR device operates at a supply voltage of 3.3V. It features two Power down pins to facilitate software power control. When the supply voltage is greater than 3.3V, the SN65ELT20DR device can also be used as an open-drain level shifter.

The SN65ELT20DR device operates in accordance with the logic families described in the two truth tables. When used as the low-to-high-level translator, the SN65ELT20DR will convert a low level signal of 1.2V or lower up to 2.5V or higher. When used as the high-to-low-level translator, the SN65ELT20DR will convert a high level signal of 1.8V or higher down to 0.7V or lower. Whenever a logic 0 is input to the translator, the output of the SN65ELT20DR is disabled, conserving power and preventing loading of the logic family.

The SN65ELT20DR is one of the few practical devices available that offer bidirectional level translation. The device is designed to provide a low-cost, simple, and efficient level translation solution for a variety of mixed system environments. It enables fast; low-cost; and reliable bidirectional level translation between the logic families of 1.8V and 2.5V. The SN65ELT20DR is a cost-effective and reliable solution for bridging the voltage gap between logic families.
