Logic-signal switches, multiplexers and decoders form the basic building blocks for digital systems. By being able to route, select and decode digital signals, these components provide the means for data communication and generation of logic functions. The SN7445N is a well-known example of such a logic-signal switch, multiplexer or decoder.
The SN7445N is known as an ‘enhanced’ logic signal switch, decoder or multiplexer. It is designed to provide digital signal routing, selection and decoding with less input loading than the traditional SN74LS45N. It uses a low input capacitance design to allow digital signals to travel through with minimum losses at faster switching speeds. The SN7445N operates over a wide voltage range of 4.5 to 18V and is capable of driving up to 10 TTL loads.
The internal structure of the SN7445N consists of two stages, both of which are a 4-bit unidirectional bus transceiver. The first stage includes four bins which are connected to individual bits in the first bus. These four bins act as switches for each bit. Each bit can be switched on its own. The output of each bit is passed to the second stage, where it is combined with the other three bits to form a 4-bit data word. The result is a 4-bit bus that can be switched on the basis of specific logic conditions.
When it comes to its working principle, the SN7445N is essentially a digital logic-signal switch, multiplexer or decoder that is based on the simple ‘AND’ logic function. It works by using a combination of ‘AND’ and ‘OR’ logic gates to route, select and decode its digital inputs. The SN7445N has two enable inputs which determine when the 4-bit data word should be routed to its output. When both enable inputs are a logic low (0V), the SN7445N will pass the data from its input to the output bus. If either enable input is a logic high (5V), the output bus will remain in a ‘high-impedance’ state and will not pass any data.
The SN7445N is well suited for a number of applications, including digital signal routing, selection and decoding of data in control and computing systems. It is especially useful in applications that require the routing or decoding of digital signals with minimum losses at faster switching speeds. It is also useful in applications that require the conversion of digital signals to analog voltages, such as instrumentation, data acquisition and linear motion control systems.
