Logic-signal switches, multiplexers, and decoders are some of the most important components in today’s digital systems and the SN74ALS153D is a general purpose, four-line to one-line data selector/multiplexer which provides the opportunity for applications in any digital logic system. This Digital IC provides the user with high-speed performance for multiplexing operations and this article will discuss the application and working principle of the SN74ALS153D in detail.

As a logic-signal switching device, the SN74ALS153D is highly suitable for multiplexing operations in any digital systems. It allows users to select one bit of data from either four sources and to then output that data to one single output. This is useful in applications such as multiple selection of data obtained from serial or parallel data ports, or in the demultiplexing of data from one single serial data stream. The chip can also be used as a general purpose 4-to-1 multiplexer, allowing the user to select from any of four different digital signals.

In terms of its working principle, the SN74ALS153D contains four D-type flip-flops which allow for four data inputs to be selected for multiplexing operations. The chip also contains an Address Input enable pin which provides slow switching between input ports. The SN74ALS153D is also equipped with two Enable pins, A and B, which serve to select between the two different timing phases of the device when used for multiplexing operations. When Enable A is low, the SN74ALS153D will select data from the A inputs, and when Enable B is low, the SN74ALS153D will select data from the B inputs. This allows the user to control which bits of data they want to use in their application.

The device is also equipped with a serial Data Input. This feature allows the user to multiplex data that has already been serialized by another device. As the serial Data Input is applied to the chip’s output at each clock cycle, the SN74ALS153D can be used as a 4 bit demultiplexer which can convert a serial data stream into 4-bit parallel data. This is useful in applications that require conversion between serial and parallel data.

In terms of its physical characteristics, the SN74ALS153D is designed to operate over a wide range of temperatures – from -40°C to +85°C – and is capable of a maximum operating voltage of +6V. It is also equipped with an operating current of +/- 400μA and can switch up to a maximum of 24mA with a minimum of 0.2V drop. Its integrated circuits are also designed to tolerates multiple noise pulses and spikes on the power supply, which helps the device to remain resistant against ESD events.
