SN74ALS158D Application Field and Working Principle

SN74ALS158D is a Quad 2-Line-to-1-Line Data Selector/Multiplexer, which belongs to the Logic - Signal Switches, Multiplexers and Decoders category. It is a single, 14-lead, low power CMOS device that has high-speed Switching, selective level shifting and low currents. The SN74ALS158D provides the user faster and highly reliable data path switching solution and original device layout.This SN74ALS258D multiplexer can be used to provide quicker and more reliable switching, selective level shifting and transmission of data from multiple sources. In layman’s terms, it is a device that allows the user to quickly and accurately select the appropriate data lifeline depending on the input. The SN74ALS158D multiplexer can also be used for signal demultiplexing and bus splitting.The SN74ALS158D is designed to be used in control circuits, interface circuits, signal selectors, arithmetic units and data buses. It can be used for both line-buffered and unbuffered data transmission. It also provides output at TTL levels rather than a buffered signal, allowing faster transmission of data than with some other multiplexers.The working principle of this device depends on the data selector configuration. It is a multiplexer that has four 2-to-1 multiplexers. The data selector has separate “A” and “B” 2-to-1 muxes. The "A" select lines are designated S0, S1, S2, S3 and the "B" select lines are designated S4, S5, S6, S7.When two input data sources (data A and data B) are selected by the “S” select lines, the outputs (data O1, O2, O3, O4) are provided. The select lines S3, S4, S5, S6 determine which data output line is connected to which input data line.The “S” select lines are used to control the selection of the data inputs from data A and data B to the respective output lines O1, O2, O3, and O4. Depending on which select line is active, the respective enabled line can be switched over to its destination output line.The SN74ALS158D multiplexer supports multiple configurations such as the two-wire, four-wire and five wire configuration. In the two-wire configuration, both data A and data B require two signal lines per side of the mux. This configuration is known as the two-wire transmission. The four-wire configuration is known as the four-wire transmission. In this configuration, both data A and data B are separately inputted at two separate signal lines per side of the mux. This configuration offers a clock speed of up to 40MHz with 8-bit buses. Finally, there is the five-wire configuration. This is known as the five-wire transmission. It requires five signal lines for each side of the mux and it offers a clock speed of up to 50MHz with 9-bit buses.The SN74ALS158D is designed with very low on-resistance. Therefore, it can select data paths based on low voltage requirements, usually less than 6V. It has an output pin for each of the four output ports and these may be used as open-drain or push-pull outputs.It also has a fast settling time of 400 ns and a low power consumption of around 2mA. Furthermore, it has a wide operating temperature range of -55C to 125C. The SN74ALS158D is available in a 14-pin plastic DIP package. Overall, the SN74ALS158D multiplexer is a great data path switching solution that provides fast, efficient switching and level shifting of data. It is also low power and can handle low voltage requirements, making it ideal for many different applications.
