The count down proceeds according to the falling edge of CP1 and CP2. Whenever one of the clock inputs goes low, the corresponding output goes high, and all outputs to the right of that output, including the output itself, go low.

In synchronous count, the SN74ALS161BN functions as an 8-bit binary down counter. When CP1 and CP2 are both high, all outputs to the right of the count (Q1 - Q8) indicate the value in the binary down counter. As soon as the lowest order bit goes low, the counter resets and all outputs to the right of the count go high.

The SN74ALS161BN is an extremely versatile counter because it can be used in a variety of applications. For example, it can be used in Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) applications to time and divide the pulse width.
