• SN74HC161D is a widely used 16-bit synchronous presettable counter with an asynchronous reset input and selectable distinct ripple or decode count signals. It works on the binary-coded decimal (BCD) coded count sequence.

• Application Field

  In electronic counter applications, the SN74HC161D is widely used as a finite-state machine controller including up/down counters, which store up to 16 individual inputs in a fixed control logic block that can be used for a variety of data handling tasks. In addition, its wide-range of operational voltage enables it to be used to count low-voltage signals over a range of up to 32kHz, making it suitable for applications such as frequency counters, pulse-width width meters, and time-dependent data analysis systems.

• Working Principle

  The SN74HC161D works on a binary-coded decimal (BCD) coded count sequence in order to achieve 16-bit synchronous presettable counter output. The main components of the SN74HC161D include a reset function (RST), two 4-bit counter stages (C4-C7, C0-C3) and a carry out signal (CHO).Data is stored in the counter stages in two 4-bit words. When used for counting purposes, the RST line is pulled low, resetting all bits of the counter stages. During the counting process, CHO goes from high to low after the eight pulses have been counted, while the C0-C3 output is the 4-bit counter value at that time. At the same time, C4-C7 goes low, enabling the next count cycle. This cycle is repeated until the counter reaches its maximum count number, when RST is again released.
