Working Principle

The SN74HC161DR consists of four flip-flops, four three-input and gates, four set and reset gates, and one divide-by-N counter. The three-input and gates are capable of providing logic OR, XOR, and NAND functions while the set and reset gates enable pulse-width modulation. The divide-by-N counter enables the device to divide the rate of incoming pulses by a number. The device can be programmed, or configured, by selecting the divide-by-N count using the divide-by-N data input and the divide-by-N enable inputs. This allows the device to observe any pulse rates from 0-7.
