The SN74LS122DG4 is a monostable multivibrator component manufactured by the Texas Instruments Corporation that is used in a range of applications ranging from communication, computerized automation and security, to industrial and automotive systems. A multivibrator is an electronic circuit composed of two amplifying units, which can either be used as a switch that can open and close electrically or to produce rectangular pulses of a certain frequency. The SN74LS122DG4 consists of two integrated 5-40V single NPN transistor stages and a reference voltage source, the inputs and outputs are connected to a 14-pin DIP package for easy mounting on to the board. The first stage operates as a Schmitt trigger, which has two different trsnsition levels, allowing it to be used as a switch or a clock pulse generator and the second stage is a push-pull amplifier driver which provides sufficient current to amplify the signal and feed it to the output. The output pulse will disappear once the capacitor has discharged to a certain value. In the stable state, the outputs of both the trigger and amplifier change with respect to each other as long as the trigger is activated. This allows the multivibrator to be used as a frequency switching device, a debouncer, or an oscillator. The SN74LS122DG4 is designed for digital operation and is capable of operating at very high speeds, up to one-hundred twenty-five Hertz. It is also capable of providing a wide range of outputs depending upon the type of application and the components used and is extremely reliable, with a frequency accuracy that can be as low as one-thousandth of a Hertz. The SN74LS122DG4 is commonly used in communication, computerized automation and industrial systems, such as robot controllers, CNC controllers and power supply control systems.
