Logic – Signal Switches, multiplexers, decoders form major building blocks for any digital system. Among these, SN74LS151DR is one of the most commonly used multiplexer/demultiplexer family. SN74LS151DR is a 4-bit data selector multiplexer features single control-signal select capability. It is a low power device with low noise outputs. SN74LS151DR is especially useful in applications where large number of data switches are needed.

SN74LS151DR has 16 pins divided into two groups. The first group consists of 8 pins and is used to interface the multiplexer chip with the outside world. These are labelled (from left to right) as A0, A1, A2, A3, GS0/INH, GS1/INH#, Y0 to Y7 and NC. Where A0 to A3 are address lines, GS0/INH is the select line, GS1/INH# is the not-select line, Y0 to Y7 are data output pins and NC is the no connect pin. Data inputs for the multiplexer are connected to the second group of 8 pins labelled D0 to D7 in same sequence.

SN74LS151DR works on the basis of four address lines A0 to A3 which represent an integral binary count from 0 to 15. In its most basic form, the four address lines of this multiplexer are connected to a 4-bit counter which works as a amplifier and counts from 0 to 15. As the binary count is incremented, the bit combination of address lines change correspondingly. The output of the multiplexer is controlled by the select line GS0/INH. Thus, each time the binary count changes, one of the digital inputs connected to the multiplexer outputs its logic on the data lines. This process is repeated as the binary count is incremented by the counter.

The most common application of SN74LS151DR is to select one bit from multiple bits in a rapid and efficient manner. In order to do this, the data-inputs D0 to D7 are connected in parallel to the 8-bit data input and data outputs Y0 to Y7 are connected to the eight bit output. When the binary count of address lines A0 to A3 is incremented from 0 to 15, the data from the 8-bits are sequentially passed to the 8 outputs.

SN74LS151DR is also used in broadcasting of bidirectional communication. For this application, the frequency of the binary count is adjusted to a particular frequency such that the counter counts up to 15 and back to 8 multiple times, this way the data is broadcasted in both directions. This kind of application is very useful in multiplexers with large number of data lines.

SN74LS151DR is used in many other applications to efficiently and reliably switch multiple datapaths. Generally, multiplexers are used in digital systems to reduce the number of inputs and outputs, decrease the size and complexity of the system. SN74LS151DR is one of the most commonly used multiplexers for this purpose.
