The SN74LS163AD is a 4-bit ripple counter made of CMOS logic which uses the ripple carry principle. It is used to count the number of pulses and automatically advances its output after each pulse, either in binary or BCD format. The counter can be used for applications in industrial and scientific measuring equipment, automated manufacturing processes, and processor-controlled systems. A ripple counter consists of a chain of cascaded flip-flops. The D input can also be used for setting the counter to an initial count other than zero by applying two consecutive pulses to the D input. The clock (CLK) input is used to increment the count of the counter. It enables the counter to count the number of pulses applied to it. The counter can be used in four modes, i.e. asynchronous (free running) mode, synchronous mode, synchronous loading mode, and synchronous reset mode. The counter operates in synchronous mode by applying a clock (CLK) pulse to both the CLK and asynchronous (ASYN) inputs. In free-running mode, the asynchronous (ASYN) input is connected to a HIGH (1) while the synchronous (CLK) input is connected to a LOW (0) input.
In synchronous loading mode, the asynchronous (ASYN) input is High (1) while the synchronous (CLK) input is LOW (0). When the HIGH (1) input is applied to the asynchronous (ASYN) input, the data at the data (D) inputs is loaded into the counter. In synchronous reset mode, the CLK and asynchronous (ASYN) inputs are connected to the HIGH (1) input. When the HIGH (1) transition is applied to both inputs, the counter is reset to its initial state (0).
