The SN74LS191D is an integrated logic device manufactured by the Texas Instruments company. These devices are primarily used in digital logic circuits and tend to be used in applications or areas where a reliable counter is required. This device is primarily used to measure, divide and count pulses as well as to divide a given frequency in different intervals. The SN74LS191D is often used in semiconductor memories, counters, multiplexers, timers, computer-controlled processes and bistable circuits.The SN74LS191D is an 8-bit synchronous binary counter which is composed of four stages, each with two flip-flop outputs. The two flip-flops in each stage are connected to provide a single binary state. These counters are designed to count in synchronous binary up or down operations in response to a single clock or count pulse. The maximum frequency of the clock is 2MHz and the inputs and outputs may be connected to the internal counter without the need of external circuitry.This device counts up to 256 and down to zero. It also has two preset inputs (two separate 8-bit memory locations) so that counters can be preset to either binary ‘00’ or a particular binary number. Depending on the control logic levels, the counter can be programmed to count up or count down count rate is determined by the highest order stage and the preset inputs can be programmed to any number from zero to two hundred-fifty-six (‘00’ to ‘FF’).In addition, the SN74LS191D can also be used as a modulo counter which is a counter that counts from 0 to some prescribed limit and then wraps around from the limit to zero. When the counter reaches its maximum value, the output of the last stage will go high and when the counter reaches zero, the first stage output will go to a low state. The counter can be used to count pulse frequency and to divide any signal frequency with a frequency in the order of kHz.On the macro level, the SN74LS191D is designed to support several operation modes. It supports pre-load logic where the output of the counter stages can be preset to their initial values. The Presetable UP/Down Counter allows us to prescribe the direction of the count and the Internal Self-Clocking Mode allows us to effortlessly enable the counter to respond to each count pulse. In addition, the SBPL permit mode enables us to easily program the output of the counter stages.The SN74LS191D is a versatile integrated device that can be programmed for a variety of applications. It is useful for measuring, dividing, and counting pulses, determining pulse frequency and dividing any signal frequency. It has a reliable denomination of 8-bits and supports various operation modes with pre-load logic that permits us to program the counter stages simply.
