SP3222EBEY-L is a single-ended, full-duplex, high-speed RS-485 transceiver with an integrated transformer driver and receiver that enables reliable operation on long bus lines. It operates from supplies of 3.0V to 3.6V as supplied with high speed (up to 1Mb/s) on a single pair of data lines.

Working Principle

The SP3222EBEY-L transceiver consists of a transmitter, receiver and a transformer driver. The transmitter is an open collector driver with three-state inputs, with an integrated pull-up resistor that is activated by the driver enable pin. The receiver includes a differential comparator with Schmitt trigger inputs, and an associated filter section. The transformer driver is configured as a full-bridge with one of the devices providing the input enable control.

This full bridge operational mode allows for better performance compared to devices which operate in half bridge mode due to lower power consumption, higher immunity to noise and better output drive. It also enables a differential receiver input with hysteresis when enabled. This hysteresis helps reduce EMC emissions, as well as reducing the susceptibly to common mode noise spikes.

The nominal output voltage is 5 V and the typical supply current is 5.6 mA at 3.3 V supply. The bus voltage levels are adjustable and the SP3222EBEY-L transceiver is able to detect multiple logic high and logic low levels. The typical offset of the receiver falls within ±1 V, and the receiver gain is adjustable, giving flexibility of operation in noisy environments.
