The SP490EN-L device is part of the 500kHz family of board-level, low power, half-duplex, synchronous communication interface transceivers. It is specifically designed to serve as an interface between a low-speed microcontroller, such as an 8-bit MCU, and the asynchronous RS-485 industrial communications networks. It is used in industrial automation, asset tracking, environmental and factory automation systems.

The devices integrate a power-efficient half-duplex transceiver and protocol controller, which enables low-cost implementations of multi-drop networks used in commercial and consumer electronics. The device also features a user-selected operating-mode selectable software flow control mechanism and offers both low- and high-speed modes in its UART interface.

The two main functions of the SP490EN-L device are receiver and transmitter synchronization and the link mode control, both enabled by its protocol controller logic. The receiver synchronization function allows the device to detect an incoming data stream and the link mode control allows for arbitration between the controller and its data source. In other words, the controller manages the access of the data source to the communication bus.

In addition, the SP490EN-L device also includes an integrated line-driver and receiver/transmitter amplitude matching circuitry to ensure reliable communication. This yields improved noise immunity and performance in multipoint applications. The device\'s optional EIA-485 transceiver utilizes an integrated Pull-Up resistor, eliminating the need for an external pull-up resistor. In addition, the device is optimized to reduce parts counts and component costs while reducing overall board-level power consumption, resulting in a smaller board footprint.

The SP490EN-L device employs a flexible unbalanced data access implementation to provide efficient data link control. This implementation is based on an always-on control channel, with an active-low frame-enable and frame-inhibit signal. The application also takes advantage of an optional half-duplex switch mode to enable full-duplex operation, as well as a selectable 4-wire based link.

The SP490EN-L device operates on a 1.8V to 3.6V power supply comparable to the power supply voltage of other low-speed microcontrollers that require only one power supply, reducing the total system cost. The device\'s extended temperature range from -40°C to +85°C makes it suitable for a wide range of applications. The device also includes an integrated voltage and current monitoring feature for power saving and improved reliability.
