Supervisors are an important part of power management integrated circuits (PMICs). They play a critical role in the overall performance of a system, ensuring that external power supplies are properly regulated and that supply voltages are correctly maintained. They are also used to protect systems from lock-up conditions caused by low input voltages, overvoltages and various fault conditions, protecting the system from expensive repairs and outages.One example of a supervisor is the SP708SCN-L/TR, an integrated power supply supervisor and power good detector designed to protect a system, monitor and maintain correct supply voltages, and ensure reliable system operation. The SP708SCN-L/TR is an ultra-low power consumption supervisor that consumes only 2.2uA of quiescent current, while still providing many features and functions in a small 6-pin SOT-23 package.The SP708SCN-L/TR’s application field includes a wide range of power supply systems, including 3.3V, 5V, and 5.5V DC systems. It is suitable for use in AC adapter monitoring, brown out protection, over-current protection, over-voltage protection, under-voltage protection, reset delays, manual reset and power fail detection circuitry. The SP708SCN-L/TR can also be employed in order to support OTP functions such as device programming and customer ID programming.In terms of its working principle, the SP708SCN-L/TR uses a comparator-based circuit to compare an adjustable threshold voltage to the monitored voltage. When the monitored voltage is lower than the threshold voltage, the supervisor triggers an active-low reset output (RESET).In addition, the SP708SCN-L/TR has an adjustable power good delay, controlled by an external resistor. When the power supply voltage is within training limits (typically 2%rising or falling of Vdd), the power good signal (PGOOD) will stay high for the duration of the delay. During this time, the pull-up resistor used to provide the supply voltage to the circuit can be used for time-limited operations such as device programming, reset delay, manual reset and power fail detect, using the reset signal as a signal to terminate the operation.Finally, the SP708SCN-L/TR incorporates an over-voltage detect function, which can be used to protect the system from over-voltage conditions. It is also featured with an active-low open drain output that is open drain during normal operating conditions, and is active low during an over-voltage condition.In conclusion, the SP708SCN-L/TR is a versatile and user-friendly power supervisor and power good detector designed to monitor, maintain and protect a wide range of power supply systems.
