Working Principle: SP721ABTG works on the principle of switching transistors and passive components which make it suitable for a wide variety of applications. The device consists of two main parts; a clamp component, and a series device. The series device, also called a shunt device, is a fast-acting transistor with an intrinsic diode connected to its base-collector terminals. This diode provides protection against overvoltage. The clamp component, also called an active clamp FET (Field Effect Transistor), consists of two components; a clamp FET which is used to switch on and off the clamp voltage, and a zener diode which is used to limit the clamp voltage. The active clamp FET senses the voltage fluctuations and injects an appropriate amount of current to the device when an overvoltage occurs. The clamp device then protects the device from both overvoltage and undervoltage.
The SP721ABTG is capable of providing both ESD protection and surge protection in the same package. The ESD protection is provided through zener diodes connected to the drain of the clamp FET. These zener diodes provide protection against ESD by clamping the voltage at the drain of the FET. The surge protection is provided by the series device, which allows for fast switching and low impedance. SP721ABTG also utilizes thermal and latching functions for effective protection against ESD, surge, and inrush.
