TVS - Diodes find applications in a broad array of designs where transient voltage protection is an important factor. The SRDA12 - 4.TBT is the latest in a long line of industry-leading transil (Transient Voltage Suppressor) devices from STMicroelectronics, designed specifically to protect circuit boards and other components from transient overvoltages. Transil devices act as a clamp, diverting damaging overvoltage away from the sensitive components, thus providing protection from electrostatic discharge (ESD), radio-frequency interference (RFI), lightning surge protection, and overvoltage protection.

The SRDA12-4.TBT offers enhanced performance and features compared to previous transil designs. It has a clamping voltage which is adjustable up to 24V, allowing it to be easily set to the voltage levels required for optimal protection of the sensitive components it is protecting. It also offers a maximum power dissipation of 850 mW, which allows it to handle a wide variety of potential overvoltage scenarios. Other features include a very low stand-off voltage, which allows it to switch on quickly and accurately, and a small package size which allows the component to be used in a variety of applications.

The working principle of SRDA12-4.TBT relies upon the intrinsic features of an avalanche diode. A reverse biased avalanche diode will, when presented with a high enough reverse voltage, enter into avalanche breakdown. This breakdown is a phenomena that occurs when the electric field within the junction is so strong that electrons and holes are accelerated to such high speeds that they literally collide with each other at tremendous force, releasing additional charge carriers and thus creating a “supercurrent” in the opposite direction. This supercurrent is capable of dissipation of an excessive or transient electrical current without damage to the device itself.

The SRDA12-4.TBT is designed to monitor incoming electrical signals, and to protect against both transient over-voltage and under-voltage conditions. The device has two terminals, an anode (positive) and cathode (negative). When an excessive voltage is presented to the device, the transistor inbuilt into the device enters avalanche breakdown, and the current that is generated by the charge carriers is diverted to the cathode and is released to the ground. This process is very fast and starts as soon as the avalanche breakdown is reached. The amount of current that is diverted is limited, and this is what protects the sensitive components and circuits from damage.
