Rectifier diodes are essential components used to convert alternating currents (AC) to direct currents (DC) for electronic circuits. Single Phase Metal Oxide Semiconductor (MOS) Gate (SS19 M2G) is a special type of semiconductor rectifier diode. Its most significant advantage over standard rectifier diodes is the capability to control the current conduction and reduce the current harmonics. Furthermore, it is suitable for Rectified Alternating Voltage (RAV) and line frequency applications.
SS19 M2G diodes are two terminal devices, where the anode is connected to the positive voltage source, while the cathode is connected to the load. The main feature which differentiates SS19 M2G diodes from traditional rectifier diodes is their metal gate. The gate terminal, which is insulated from both anode and cathode, is connected to a control voltage source. Thus, the gate voltage can be adjusted to regulate the forward current conduction through the diode and the rate of current flow is proportional to the gate voltage. However, the gate voltage only affects the forward conduction and does not have an effect on the reverse biasing. The SS19 M2G diodes has a higher current carrying ability than conventional rectifier diodes, because the gate terminal controls the current conduction more efficiently. On the other hand, it also enables the user to control the current harmonics easily due to the fact that the current conduction can be adjusted by altering the gate voltage. Furthermore, MOS diodes have the capability to switch the current conduction in both forward and reverse polarities, making them suitable for static relays, static switches and static timers.
The working principle of the SS19 M2G diode can be explained as follows: when the applied voltage across the anode and cathode is greater than the threshold voltage, the current flows from the anode to the cathode. The current flow also depends on the gate voltage, where the greater the gate voltage, the larger the current flow. The gate is insulated from both the anode and cathode, and the gate voltage can be adjusted to control the current conduction. When the current reaches its peak value, the diode is said to be in saturation and the current cannot increase further. When the forward bias is reversed, the diode switches to the reverse polarity, resulting in the cutoff of the current conduction.
In conclusion, the SS19 M2G diode has great advantages compared to traditional rectifier diodes, such as the ability to control the current conduction and reduce the current harmonics. Its working principle is simple and efficient and its application fields include static relays, static switches, static timers and RAV applications.
