ST10100STR Application Field and Working Principle
ST10100STR is one of the most commonly used rectifier diodes, which has a high forward voltage drop and low leakage current sharing the same characteristics as other rectifier diodes. Working Principle
ST10100STR rectifier diodes operate by controlling the direction of the electric current flow in a given circuit. When the diode’s anode is more positive than the cathode, current will not flow through the diode and the diode is said to be off. When the cathode is more positive than the anode, or in other words the diode is forward biased, current will flow through the diode and it is said to be ‘on’. During normal operation, current will only flow through the ST10100STR rectifier diode in the forward direction. When the current flow is reversed, the device begins to exhibit non-linear behaviour, and it is said to be ‘reverse biased’.
The behaviour of a ST10100STR rectifier diode during reverse bias is determined by the built in electric field. At a certain reverse bias voltage, called the ‘breakdown voltage’, the electric field strength becomes high enough to create a large number of electron-hole pairs in the diode’s depletion region. This phenomenon is known as ‘avalanche breakdown’, and it results in a large current flow - a phenomenon known as ‘reverse-current conduction’.
The forward voltage drop of a ST10100STR rectifier diode is typically 0.7V, and the current passing through it is limited by its reverse breakdown voltage, which is typically 100V. In order to reduce power dissipation in the rectifier diode, built-in resistors can be added to limit the current in the reverse-biased condition, or the diode can be connected in series with other diodes.
