Working Principle of ST1045STR
The ST1045STR is composed of two components, namely a PN-junction and a rectifier layer. When electrical current is applied, a PN-junction is created in which majority carriers of electrons and holes are forced to move in opposite directions. The majority carriers move against diffusion potential of the junction and create an electric field that impairs electrons, resulting in them accumulating near the positive side of the junction. This accumulation is referred to as a depletion zone. Afterwards, the rectifier layer is implemented to form the junction, incorporating a diode that is able to prevent the flow of electrons from travelling in both directions.
The rectifier layer, or the anode side, contains positively charged particles that form a barrier against the electrons entering the junction from the anode side. The electrons can however, enter from the cathode side as the particles forming the barrier are negatively charged. This sets up a one-way street for the current, allowing it to enter from the cathode side and leave through the anode side. If a current is applied from the anode side however, the path is blocked due to the positive charge and no current flows.
