ST4045C belongs to the STMicroelectronics HCMOS and HV CMOS IC families, and is part of their Diodes-Rectifiers-Arrays application field. ST4045C provides complex protection functions for 4-phase power modules and system power supplies in various operating systems. This device is designed to protect against overvoltage, undervoltage and ESD hazards, as well as reverse connection of the power source, allowing the user freedom of design for the most reliable system power supply solution.
The working principle of the ST4045C is built on its two different protection functions: overvoltage protection (OVP) and transient overvoltage protection (TOD). OVP is used to protect the power supply against overvoltage conditions and is based on a comparator which compares the voltage of the power supply voltage to a pre-determined threshold voltage. When the power supply voltage reaches the predetermined threshold level, the comparator generates a latency pulse which is then used to signal the OVP signal. When the OVP signal is active, the device will immediately block the power supply from being supplied to any device connected to the power supply.
The second protection function of the ST4045C is transient overvoltage protection (TOD). This function is designed to protect the system from transient surges in power supply voltage that can occur from a variety of sources such as lightning induced power spikes. The TOD function is based on an analog-to-digital converter (ADC) which measures the voltage of the power supply and compares it to a reference voltage. If the voltage difference between the two measurements is greater than a predetermined threshold, the ADC will generate a transient overvoltage protection (TOD) signal. When the TOD signal is active, the device will immediately block the power supply from being supplied to any device connected to the power supply.
The ST4045C also has a detection feature that allows it to detect if the power source is connected improperly or if the current through the power source is too high. If a reverse connection or overtemperature is detected, the device will block the power supply from being supplied to any device connected to the power supply and also provide a diagnostic LED on the module which illuminates when the power source is connected improperly or if the current through the power source is too high.
