Evaluation and demonstration boards and kits are designed to enable customers and short-term users to evaluate features, performance and different operational capabilities. Combining the hardware, software and other support materials, this type of product is tailored to simplify the development process. With the STEVAL-IHM008V1, the performance, dependability and features can be evaluated by users.
The STEVAL-IHM008V1 area motor control and power stage evaluation and demonstration board. The powerful combination of ST’s STSPIN32F0B and STGP10NM60FD is used to provide a three-shunt current sensing with an embedded EMI filter, a sinusoidal trapezoidal or block commutation and a sinusoidal dual-tuned motor controller for BLDC brushless DC motors. The STEVAL-IHM008V1 makes it very easy to evaluate and demonstrate a standard 3-phase BLDC motor drive up to 300W in a fraction of the time it would take compared to development from scratch.
The motor control theory behind the STEVAL-Ihm008V1 is based on two main control algorithms, the FOC and the state-space control. FOC stands for Field Oriented Control, this is a technique used to control the power stage of a DC motor, mainly the current in each motor winding. This technique helps achieve an optimal combination between power efficiency, torque, speed and dynamic response. The state-space control on the other hand is a technique used to control the speed of the DC motor. It makes use of the state-space equations of a motor which describe the electrical and control characteristics of a motor to be able to calculate the correct input signals for a desired speed.
Using the STEVAL-IHM008V1 it is possible to create different types of BLDC motor applications, such as, rpm and current control, digital and analog speed and current control, PWM control and even servo motor control. The board can be used with motor drive applications based on digital, sensorless field-oriented control (FOC) or closed-loop current control. For ease of use the onboard microcontroller is pre-programmed with a software example for the control of the 3-phase BLDC motor.
The STEVAL-IHM008V1 board also provides protection features, such as over-current, over-voltage, under-voltage and temperature protection. These features help to ensure that the motor is operating properly and to protect it from being over-powered or overheating. Additionally, it provides user programmable features such as adjustable over-voltage and under-voltage settings, adjustable dead-time, adjustable current limit, adjustable CPLD frequency, adjustable PWM frequency and an adjustable data-out rate.
The STEVAL-IHM008V1 board includes a monitor unit, which includes a graphical user interface (GUI) and a terminal for communication between the host PC and the board. It also includes a debug port for access to microcontroller registers, and a serial port for monitoring and troubleshooting. An in-built power stage provides an adjustable output voltage up to 50 V.
The STEVAL-IHM008V1 board can be used for various applications such as pump and fan control, process control, automotive and home appliance control, and lighting control. It is a convenient and cost-effective way to evaluate and demonstrate motor control solutions, without the need for extensive development and prototyping.
