The STEVAL-ISA058V1 is a wide-range online/offline AC/DC LED driver evaluation board specifically designed to facilitate evaluation of the VIPer12A, a member within STMicroelectronics’ VIPer series of controllers. This operating-off-line converter provides an output power and constant current source able to drive up to 18 LED series connected in parallel.

The application field of STEVAL-ISA058V1 can be found in an array of lighting applications such as LED street lamps, LED decorative lighting, LED modules, LED spots, and multiple LED indoor and outdoor lighting fixtures. This voltage controller evaluation board provides a regulated LED current source with a power regulation capability over a wide AC input voltage range of 155 Vac to 265 Vac. The board is an ideal solution for applications that require partial power regulation or exact current control and delivers a great performance with an output voltage 10 to 55 V and maximum output current of 500 mA.

The working principle of STEVAL-ISA058V1 follows the principle of a flyback half-bridge configuration with two-stage power factor correction. This converter implements a two-stage power factor correction for the integrated VIPer12A voltage controller. The primary side circuit is a low-power (8W) flyback converter, comprising of an auxiliary winding and a 12V zener diode on the secondary side for forming the VCC supply. An optocoupler is used to make the IC tolerant to open loop conditions, whereas a feedback network (#R21 and #C1/#C5) is used to make the output a constant current. The driver also includes an additional sensing winding that allows an independent output voltage to be sensed for remote lighting control. Lighting systems in outdoor applications will be able to dim the brightness of the LED lamps with the on-board rheostat present.
