The new STEVAL-ILL046V2 evaluation board is a user-friendly demonstration of STMicroelectronics’ latest complete LED driver solution - the STDRIVE407. It is a cost-effective and versatile device specially designed for designers of general lighting, consumer and illumination applications. The STEVAL-ILL046V2 is part of the STMicroelectronics ST ESD Alliance Evaluation Boards - LED Drivers family, providing an excellent tool for engineers to quickly design LEDs for various applications.

The STDRIVE407 is a multi-mode buck/boost constant current LED driver capable of driving up to 6 LEDs in a single channel without the need of any external components. The solution has a wide input voltage range, including 4V to 38V and VPWRFEED range of 1.5V to 7V. The output voltage range is available from 5V to 40V, and can provide a constantly regulated output current from 10mA up to 500mA with optimized efficiency. With a total operating temperature range of -40 C to 85 C, the circuit can operate in environments with extreme temperatures.

The STEVAL-ILL046V2 board is the ideal solution for various lighting applications, such as general lighting and consumer applications. With the presence of a 6-channel LED driver, the board can be used to drive up to 6 LEDs and reach a maximum output power of 20W. The evaluation board confers great user and development experience given it incorporates an on-board microcontroller, a USB interface, switch-off timer and a variety of additional sensors.

The STDRIVE407 boasts a wide range of features that provide significant operational reliability. The device’s self-protection function guards against the potential effects of inadequate thermal management, including an over temperature shutdown, open circuit protection and current overload limit. Additionally, the STDRIVE407 includes an integrated auto-restart feature that prevents it from interrupting the LED operation in case of a shorted LED, a shorted LED connection or water penetration.

The STEVAL-ILL046V2 evaluation board makes use of the STDRIVE407 to enable the control and monitor the LEDs over a wide range of voltages and current levels. The board is powered with a regulated power supply and features a programmed STM32L053C8 microcontroller that is responsible for managing the switching mode operation and monitoring of the LED currents. It handles input power management, LED dimming and color mixing control as well.
