The STEVAL-ISA052V1 Evaluation Board is a universal open-frame power supply designed for DC/DC & AC/DC (Off-Line) SMPS applications. This evaluation board contains isolated parts for the main power supply and a PFC area. It provides a complete development system to evaluate the performance of integrated circuits for the design of isolated low power (<= 10 W) AC/DC & DC/DC SMPS, up to 100 W, suitable for industrial, medical and general-purpose applications.

This evaluation board uses MOSFETs for both the converter bridge and the rectifier. The board also includes an NTC thermistor, which provides temperature protection for the load. The board is populated with a controller, a converter IC, diodes and supporting components.

The STEVAL-ISA052V1 evaluation board has a very low power consumption of 3 W and incorporates a snubber-based LED dimming circuit. The high-efficiency LED is capable of being dimmed from its brightest to its dimmest settings simply by changing the voltage supplied to the LED. The LED is operated in constant current mode for a wide range of line and load conditions.

The STEVAL-ISA052V1 evaluation board works on a very simple principle. When a voltage is applied to the input, the diodes in the rectifier bridge convert the AC input power into DC. The DC is filtered by an inductor and then applied to the MOSFETs in the converter bridge. During the switch ON times, the MOSFETs transfer power from the input line to the output line. When the MOSFETs are switched OFF, the inductor generates an output voltage that is proportional to the current flowing through it.

The board also features a number of integrated components that provide protection and configuration of the system. It has an EMI filter for the line power entry, input and output overvoltage protection, overcurrent protection, temperature protection, and earth leakage current protection. The board also has a built-in circuit to reduce the output voltage ripple and regulation.
