STEVAL-ISA079V2 is one of the evaluation boards for offline switch-mode power supplies (SMPSs) of DC/DC and AC/DC. It is a very efficient and smart solution for converting an AC voltage to various output DC voltages, making it ideal for applications such as LED lighting, office lighting and other lighting applications. It supports both quasi-resonant and fixed-frequency continuous conduction modes (CRM & FCM), enabling simplified circuitry, high efficiency and low EMI. The STEVAL-ISA079V2 evaluation board consists of a synchronous power factor correction (PFC) stage operating in fixed frequency mode, followed by a quasi-resonant flyback stage. It offers an input voltage range of 85-277VAC for the PFC stage and output power up to 58W. The board includes an on-board controller with selectable frequency, synchronous rectification and pulse-by-pulse overcurrent foldback, and can be operated from a single mains voltage source. It also features a driverless switch-mode voltage regulator (VoltReg) stage with selectable output voltage, selectable output current and a shutdown capability. The board has an adjustable voltage AC/DC input, an LED dimmer input, a 78xx voltage regulator and a number of I/O pins for connection to external controllers.

The working principle of the STEVAL-ISA079V2 evaluation board is as follows. The PFC stage takes the AC input and rectifies it to deliver a DC voltage. This DC voltage is then inverted by the DC/DC stage to provide a regulated DC output voltage. The inverter section of the DC/DC stage can operate in CCM or QR mode, depending on the type of converter chosen. The QR controller adjusts the frequency of the switching pulses according to the load, providing regulation, efficiency and EMI improvements. The LED dimmer input allows dimming of the DC output voltage, and the driverless VoltageReg stage can generate an adjustable voltage from the DC output for the application.
