Introduction

Working Principle
The STEVAL-ISA116V1 evaluation board is based on a simplified version of the fly-back topology. The board consists of a Power MOSFET, which is connected to the AC input voltage, a dual winding transformer with an input/output winding, and a self-oscillating circuit consisting of an opto-coupler, a soft start up circuit with a minimum startup resistor, a frequency compensation circuit, and two parasitic capacitors.
The input voltage is applied to the primary winding of the transformer, where it is stepped up to provide a high voltage output for the SMPS circuit. The opto-coupler uses the incoming power to create a pulse-width-modulated signal that controls the Power MOSFET, which turns the power on and off repeatedly to create an AC to DC conversion. The soft start up and frequency compensation circuit help to improve the efficiency of the power MOSFET and ensure better transient performance.
Once the output voltage is set, the SMPS circuit is capable of providing reliable power to the load. The power MOSFET controls the power delivery to the load by turning the power on and off. The transformer isolates the output voltage from the AC input and ensures that no voltage spikes get into the system. In addition, the evaluation board has a variety of protection features, such as an over current protection and thermal protection, to avoid any electrical problems due to excessive power.
