The STEVAL-ISA161V1 Evaluation Board is specifically designed to meet the requirements of applications ranging from DC/DC & AC/DC (Off-Line) Switch Mode Power Supplies. STEVAL-ISA161V1 is suitable for evaluating the performances of ICE3B0565Q/F and ICE3BR0565J/F 600V Cool MOS Power Transistors in off-line SMPS up to 100W (continuous mode) and operated at quasi-resonant frequency. In addition to that, it can also be employed for various DC/DC & AC/DC adapter applications.

The STEVAL-ISA161V1 board features a wide range of power levels up to 100W for continuous mode operation and consists of standard components widely used in the market today. The board is equipped with an AC/DC input rectifier bridge which is followed by a line filter circuit comprising of a 3A fuse, EMI filter and PFC choke. The filter circuit is used to reduce the EMI signals generated as well as to provide protection against overloads or short circuits. Additionally, the PFC choke increases the current draw from the AC source without significantly increasing the inrush current.

The STEVAL-ISA161V1 board features a half-bridge PFC stage, the critical component in the DC to DC conversion process. Both the high and low side switch are ICE3B0565 transconductance power MOSFETs. These MOSFETs are particularly intended for high voltage switching applications, thanks to their 600V Breakdown Voltage level, together with their low On-state resistance. A 12V DC boost converter is used to provide the gate drive voltage for the primary switch which is followed by an isolated flyback converter used for the main power conversion. An auto restart logic circuit is also provided, which is connected to the output of the PFC stage to detect the overvoltage situation and to turn off the switches.

The primary output of the STEVAL-ISA161V1 board is a quasi-resonant duty adjusted flyback topology with an isolated output. The secondary side is comprised of a standard rectifier bridge and filter capacitor for regulation. However, for certain applications, additional output regulation can be applied by adding additional components to the output of the flyback converter. To further reduce the ripple on the output voltage, the STEVAL-ISA161V1 board is equipped with two output SMD capacitors.

The STEVAL-ISA161V1 board also features a self-protecting LED dimmer circuit. The input voltage is regulated by a voltage regulator with a current limit, against overloading, and a thermal shut-down protection. The LED dimmer also features an optimized gate drive voltage, free of interference and enabling low dimming levels at the same time. A green LED on the board displays the operating status of the converter while a red LED shows the operating status of the gate drive.

In addition to these features, the STEVAL-ISA161V1 board also includes an on-board digital signal processor (DSP) which enables precise control and feedback of the switching frequencies over the a range from 50KHz to 100KHz.This DSP also features a smooth dimming control with no flicker. Furthermore, the included STM32F042 microcontroller provides an industry standard communication interface, allowing the converter to be operated remotely.
