The STEVAL-MKI078V1 offers a complete evaluation environment for applications featuring 6D motion and environmental sensing. This kit is highly suited for human motion tracking and fall detection in consumer products such as gaming and sports. It is also suitable for industrial applications where accurate motion sensing is required, such as vibration monitoring. In addition, the kit is also employed in a variety of consumer and medical applications such as turn bt detecting and inclinometer. Thanks to its dedicated firmware, a wide set of user friendly features such as tap and free fall detection can be achieved. Furthermore, this evaluation can be used to detect tilt and motion of objects, industrial robots calibration, remote controls, vibration analysis, gesture detection and classification and running motors.
Working principle of STEVAL-MKI078V1 evaluation board
The STEVAL-MKI078V1 uses the LSM6DSL, which provides motion sensing capabilities embedded in a very small size. It contains two sensing elements, a digital step-counting accelerometer and a 3-axis gyroscope. The accelerometer measures the linear acceleration of the device, while the gyroscope measures the angular velocity. The board is equipped with a Bluetooth® low energy interface for easy connection to a smartphone or a tablet for motion processing application demonstration. The sensor module can measure the motion detection, such as double-tap and free fall, helping to achieve different user experience.
The LSM6DSL features an advanced proprietary algorithm which enables the device to detect up to 6D motion, presented as two 3D line of sensing capability. It can detect a 6-directional status such as: stationary, forward/backward, up, down, left and right. This is achieved by five embedded user-programmable sensing blocks with a threshold to trigger one or several interrupt. The interrupts can be used as reaction angles, or as thresholds to alert the user of a new situation. The algorithm can detect falls from a very low height and can accurately detect the direction of fall.
In addition to the 3D line sensing capability, the LSM6DSL is also embedded with digital filters to provide the user with a cost-effective and low power solution. The digital filters help to reduce motion artifacts caused by environmental noise. It also provides a high-accuracy temperature sensor with a very low temperature coefficient, making the sensor ideal for temperature tracking applications. This evaluation board is equipped with a powerful Cortex-M4 processor to provide a complete platform for motion-sensing applications.
