The STEVAL-MKI169V1 is a complete inertial system evaluation platform for the STMicroelectronics high-performance family of 3-axis Gyroscope, 3-axis Accelerometer and pressure sensor LPS25HB. This evaluation board, available from most electronics stores, allows customers to quickly and easily evaluate the features of the underlying motion-sensing components in a variety of applications.
The STEVAL-MKI169V1 is specifically designed to provide easy access to the performance of such a combination of sensors. The board functions as a sensor control unit for the STMicroelectronics 3-axis Gyroscope (L3GD20), 3-axis Accelerometer (LIS3DH) and pressure sensor (LPS25HB) devices. The board’s analog front-end string allows customers to interface the gyroscope, accelerometer and pressure sensor inputs to standard analog circuits like audio amplifiers and switches. The board also includes all of the necessary programming and debug connectors for downloading and debugging the firmware.
The evaluation board is also equipped with a number of features that are designed to help customers maximize the performance of their application. Features like auto-calibration, temperature-compensated offset estimation, axis-remap and power saving mode are provided to users through a series of jumpers and switches. Additionally, the evaluation board supports up to 8 axes of user-defined data rate, zero-rate-culling, power-saving modes and custom configuration settings. All of these features combine to provide customers with a versatile set of options for optimizing the performance of their STMicroelectronics inertial system.
The STEVAL-MKI169V1 features an array of external analog and digital peripherals that makes it a great tool for prototyping and developing inertial system solutions. It includes an on-board RS-232 port for connecting to an external PC connection, as well as an I2C bus or SPI. Additionally, the board also has an onboard 4-pin header for driving resistive load, and a 5-pin GPIO connector for connecting external sources. Finally, the board offers the possibility of connecting a pair of external thermistors, which can be used with any of the on-board gyroscopes to accurately gauge temperature.
The working principle of the evaluation board is simple – the components on the board are organized in a single board, allowing users to easily connect to each other and to configured and debug their application processes. The board comes with a set of configurable parameters and commands which can be set up by the user. The input signals from the 3-axis gyroscope, 3-axis accelerometer and pressure sensor are first processed by the board’s analog front-end string. This allows the board to convert the input signals into an internal format which can be easily read and processed by the user’s PC. The on-board microcontroller then receives the data from the analog front-end string and processes it into orientation data, altitude data and other useful outputs.
The STMicroelectronics STEVAL-MKI169V1 is an ideal platform for evaluating the performance of gyro-accelerometer-pressure sensor combinations in a range of applications.
