The STEVAL-SMACH15V1 Evaluation Board is an off-line AC/DC switching Power Supply (SMPS) evaluation and development platform from STMicroelectronics that enables the evaluation of design solutions based on STMicroelectronics Compact Switch-Mode Power Supplies. This evaluation board is suitable for learning and laboratory experiments. It is capable of supplying up to 15W of output power. The board incorporates a wide range of features such as low power consumption, high efficiency, short circuit protection, high safety. The board enables the evaluation of a significant number of parametric configurations covering a wide range of output power levels.

The board implements synchronous rectification for improved efficiency. Furthermore, it uses a frequency shift modulator stage to control the power stage’s switching frequency and to limit average output current during overload situations. The powerful STM32G0 microcontroller provides the necessary intelligence to control the overall operation of the board and is complemented by ST’s proprietary development environment which makes it easy to quickly start and customize its operations. The evaluation board is ideal for performing a wide range of design experiments such as under voltage lockout, over temperature protection, overload protection, line voltage transients, surge survival, short-circuit protection, and EMI compliance.

The board is able to operate in discontinuous conduction mode (DCM) during light loads for improved efficiency. The board components are carefully selected to meet the required international safety regulations (UL/EN 60950-1, IEC/EN 61558-2-16). The evaluation board includes several protection features like overvoltage/undervoltage protection, overcurrent protection, and overload protection. It includes an Over Temperature Protection (OTP) circuit to limit damage due to thermal runaway by disabling the power stage output when it gets too hot.

The STEVAL-SMACH15V1 evaluation board is equipped with several outputs such as the control loop signal, the digital signal (used for monitoring the operating state) and the analog output (providing instantaneous output voltage measurements). The board is also capable of providing the user with real-time feedback on the power stage current regulation. The user can use the provided driving circuitry to set theduty cycle of the pulse width modulation (PWM) signal and control the AC/DC power delivery in order to have different operating points on the load line.
