STPS20S100CR Application Field and Working Principle

The STPS20S100CR is a general-purpose surface-mount Schottky Rectifier Array manufactured by STMicroelectronics. This device is a part of the STPS20SXXX family, a series of fully-protected rectifier diode arrays that can provide up to 45A current.

Application Field

The STPS20S100CR is a Schottky Rectifier Array which is meant for low-power, low-voltage rectification applications such as consumer electronics, automotive, white goods and SMPS. It is intended for applications requiring very low voltage drop, low switching losses and fast switching, such as power converters, AC or DC supplies, and phone chargers.

Working Principle

The STPS20S100CR, like any other rectifier diode array, functions as a one-way current valve between two terminals. This diode array is composed of two series-connected strings of Schottky diodes, each having ten diodes which are connected in parallel to form the Schottky Barrier rectifiers. It works like a two-sided gate that only allows current to flow in one direction, while blocking the flow in the opposite direction. When forward-biased, the diode array allows a large amount of current to pass through it. This current is used by the circuit to power it and is limited only by the maximum rating of the diode itself. When the current drops to zero and the voltage is reversed, the diodes act as a brake, creating a reverse-biased state and blocking any current from continuing to flow.

Protections

The STPS20SXXX family also has some built-in protection features. It has an integrated overcurrent protection and short-circuit protection, which provides protection against current surges exceeding the nominal current. This protection feature activates apparent Thermal Runaway Protection (TRP) which limits the current dissipation to manageable levels. Additionally, the device is designed to protect against voltage transients such as ESD and surge protection, boosting the overall reliability of the device.
