The STR3A153D is a member of ST’s range of power switches intended for offline switching applications. It is a three-terminal AC-DC converter of the flyback type and is designed for applications such as white goods, LED driving and power supply. Design efficiency is improved by using ST\'s proprietary current-mode architecture, providing for fast and accurate current limitation independently of the resonant-topology. Application The STR3A153D is suitable for applications such a lighting, home appliances, battery products and telecom equipment. It has integrated soft-start, active burst mode and light-load operation. It also features optimized valley detection, providing improved efficiency and offering VCC supply up to 660 V and an 800 V avalanche rugged rated supply. Its thermal shutdown shutdown temperature is set at 145°C.Output The STR3A153D offers maximum output power greater than 130W and an accurate output voltage accuracy of ±2%. It operates over a wide AC input range from 85 to 265 VAC. The output provides up to 24V and maximum current of 6A. The maximum output frequency is 120 kHz and can be adjusted by frequency modulation (FM).Protection The device offers built-in protection features like over-voltage protection, over-current protection and power-limit. It also features current limiting, over-temperature protection and short-circuit protection.Performance The STR3A153D takes advantage of the latest advanced technology, high current-mode primary switch, precision current control, efficient soft-start and more. This makes it suitable for high efficiency and high performance applications. It has a very short soft-start time and excellent line/load regulation.Power Stage The power stage of the STR3A153D contains two series-connected MOSFETs, one for high-side switch and the other for low-side switch. It also contains an avalanche rugged diode and bootstrap diode. It has excellent thermal management characteristics and is designed for low-component count and low-component height applications.Working Principle The working principle of the STR3A153D is based on an asynchronous flyback topology, which operates by the power stage detecting the peak current in the secondary winding of the transformer, and switches off when the peak current reaches a predefined level. The switching speed of the device is determined by the power stage parameters and the oscillation frequency of the inductor and transformer. When turned off, the current in primary switch, and the current in capacitor, quickly collapse and when turned on, the current in primary switch and the current in inductor ramp up until the peak current is reached.
