TVS diodes are among the most handy, practical and indispensable electronic components for any kind of circuit or system. Especially when it comes to high voltage circuits, these devices come handy as protection tools against over-voltage surges that can easily destroy sensitive downstream devices, such as microcontrollers or other sensitive circuitry. In this post, we\'ll be discussing STRVS280X02F, an ultra-low capacitance (UL) TVS diode made by STMicroelectronics.

The STRVS280X02F is a two-channel, series-connected unidirectional transient-voltage-suppression (TVS) diode developed specifically for high-speed data and signal line protection. It can be typically used in consumer and telecommunications equipment, automotive, medical and industrial environments. Or, anywhere where signals from data/signal lines have relevant spikes due to a surge. Its primary function is to provide a robust and dependable safeguard from the devastating damage caused by ESD events or over-voltage.

The STRVS280X02F TVS diode is specially designed to have a low capacitance and low leakage current when compared to other TVS diodes in its class. This enables the diode to protect data lines at a wide range of frequencies. It has an ESD clamping voltage of 14.3V and a maximum peak pulse current of 322A. It is also capable of dissipating as much as 4W of power which makes it suitable for systems prone to high-power surges. It\'s available in a 5-pin SOD-323F package which has a small footprint and is moisture resistant.

As far as the working mechanism goes, the STRVS280X02F works just like any other TVS diode. It sets up a highly resistive path across its terminals once the surge voltage rises to its clamping voltage range, also known as the breakdown voltage. It clamps the input signal voltage and limits it to safely below the damage threshold of downstream components. its breakdown voltage is usually set between 70% and 90% of the rated power to prevent deterioration of the TVS diode due to overheating.

As the surge voltage fades away the TVS diode act like forward biased diodes and does not conduct current in the reverse direction. Apart from over-voltage due to power surges, the STRVS280X02F TVS diode also protects against electrostatic discharge (ESD) and electrical fast transients (EFT). All of these help in protecting the circuit from damage due to sudden voltage rises.
