Thyristors - TRIACs are semiconductors with three terminals whose current (I) can control their voltage characteristics by means of gate signal in a bipolar junction transistor (BJT). The exact behavior of a TRIAC is a bit more complex than a BJT, and it is the nature of the gate signal that dictates how the TRIAC controls current and voltage. One such three-terminal device is the T810T-6I, a bidirectional current-controller developed by Swiss semiconductor manufacturer, STMicroelectronics. The device consists of two semiconductor chips containing a single PN junction and two layers of Field Plate isolation on one side. The control circuits these components are connected to provide the ability to control current in both the positive and negative directions. This makes the device suitable for a wide range of applications, particularly in the area of motor control in industrial and consumer electronics. The T810T-6I operates by applying a signal to the gate terminal which turns on and off one or both of the diodes in the PN junction.
