Working Principle
T85C5121-ICSIL features a 32-bit ARM Cortex-M3 processor and a variety of integrated peripherals and memory. The processor core supports up to 128KB of on-chip Flash memory, 64KB of on-chip SRAM, and an integrated NAND Flash controller and serial flash controller. This combination allows the processor to access bootstrapping program code stored in an external memory, such as an EEPROM or Flash memory, and execute it automatically at start-up.
The Cortex-M3 processor also provides several low-level hardware abstractions that generate interrupt requests upon certain conditions being met, such as a hardware timer tick. On top of the abstractions, an event loop, used to manage multitasking, is implemented to determine which task should be executed next. The processor core’s timer and watchdog are used to monitor and track tasks and interrupts, so that any unexpected activity or errors can be detected in real-time and handled accordingly.
In order to optimize power consumption, the T85C5121-ICSIL includes several power management features. The processor core can be powered down in sleep or deep sleep modes or powered off completely when not in use. In addition, the device includes two low-power clock sources, an internal oscillator and a real-time clock (RTC), both of which can be used to maintain time dependent operations such as scheduling tasks. The on-chip power management unit (PMU) also performs thermal management to reduce heat-generating activities such as running lengthy tasks.
