The TAP157M010CCS is a member of the tantalum capacitors family. It is a surface mount, solid-electrolytic capacitor, typically used in different kinds of electronic circuits. These capacitors are manufactured in accordance with the IPC/JEDEC J-STD-005 standard, and feature a long shelf life and high voltage rating.

Application Field

These tantalum capacitors are widely used in critical applications driven by high-performance systems, such as professional audio equipment, automotive electronics, aerospace systems, industrial power supplies and telecom equipment. Their small size allows them to be easily mounted and they also operate reliably at repeated high temperatures. Therefore, they are particularly suited to applications in which other types of capacitors would be impractical.

TAP157M010CCS capacitors are often used in piezoelectric transducers and buzzers, crystal oscillators, phase-locked loop circuits, and for power-supply filtering in electronic measurements, electronic communication systems, switching power supplies, and control-circuitry of industrial equipment.

Working Principle

Tantalum capacitors typically consist of a solid core made of tantalum metal powder. The core is type-sed in order to maximize its surface area. The tantalum powder is combustible, so it has to be covered with a non-combustible insulation material. This insulation is usually made of manganese dioxide. The inside surface of the capacitor is lined with a layer of electrically-conductive material, typically a combination of silver, gold, and other metallic derivatives, which forms the lower-electrode.

The upper-electrode of the tantalum capacitor is a thin-film made of sintered tantalum, which acts like a dielectric. It creates an electrical field that stores the charge. The electrical properties of the capacitor depend on the size, shape, and quality of the nanoparticles used in the core, as well as on the manganese dioxide layer. Finally, the capacitor is covered with a layer of protective material to avoid oxidation, and provide electrical insulation.

In operation, the two electrodes store electrical energy, and the capacitor can be discharged to deliver the stored energy. This is done by applying a potential difference in the two electrodes, creating an electric field in the dielectric. The electric field creates a flow of electrons across the dielectric, allowing the capacitor to release its electrical charge.

The tantalum capacitors are relatively stable and reliable, and can operate in a wide range of temperatures. This makes them ideal for applications where other types of capacitors would be impractical, due to their higher temperatures. Additionally, they are often preferred because of their low voltage leakage, low cost, and small size.
