PMIC - Gate Drivers are power management integrated circuits (ICs) capable of controlling and driving the gates of power MOSFETs and IGBTs in power electronics systems. They provide the necessary high-side and low-side gate drive voltages and feature fault protection, precision current sensing, thermal shutdown and adjustable deadtime feature to prevent shoot-through current. The TC427EPA is a high current Dual High-Side Driver which offers precise control of two independent power MOSFETs or IGBTs with a supply voltage range of 5V - 28V and is suitable for automotive and commercial applications.

TC427EPA Application Field

The TC427EPA is designed for high side and low side MOSFET and IGBT gate drive applications in an automotive environment, and is suitable for a wide range of consumer and industrial applications, including Power-Supply LED lighting and High Wattage, such as:

  • High voltage, low power motor control

The device is also capable of driving two of the six half bridges commonly used in full bridge configurations, in a number of half bridge switched-mode power supply (SMPS) and DC-to-DC converter circuits.

TC427EPA Work Principle

The TC427EPA gate driver utilises a monolithic integrated circuit, the Dual High-Side Driver, and provides a low-voltage gate-drive voltage for the power MOSFET and IGBT. The high side driver is enabled when the enable pin is pulled high, (VCC) and the low side driver is enabled when the enable pin is pulled low. The gate drivers will then maintain the voltage between the source and drain of the device at VCC-VOH.

The TC427EPA is designed to provide an independent gate drive voltage level for each half bridge, meaning that each gate voltage is not affected by the other. This ensures both MOSFETs or IGBTs are driven at the desired voltage level. The device also includes an adjustable deadtime feature which prevents shoot-through current by ensuring that the voltage applied to the gate of one device is completely off before the voltage applied to the gate of the other device is turned on.

The TC427EPA also includes a precision current sense option which allows it to sense and monitor the drain/source current. This information can then be used to detect excessive current on the outputs, to provide overcurrent protection. The device also includes built-in thermal shutdown circuitry which helps prevent device failure from excessive thermal buildup.
