Introduction to TCA9555RGER

TCA9555RGER is an integrated I/O expander that is part of the Interface - I/O Expanders family. It provides a simple, cost-effective solution for adding up to 16-bits of digital I/O expansion to the existing microcontroller, system controller or microprocessor-based design. It can be used for time-critical and continuous I/O communication between multiple microcontrollers and peripherals even under very low power consumption. It can be used in many applications such as automotive, industrial and consumer electronics, medical, wireless communications and others.

Working Principle

TCA9555RGER is a two-wire I/O expander, with two serial communication interfaces; I2C, and SPI. The I2C interface consists of a clock line (SCL) and a data line (SDA). The SPI interface consists of a clock line (SCK), a slave select line (SS), a master-out/slave-in (MOSI), and a master-in/slave-out (MISO) line. The TCA9555RGER sends and receives eight bits of data to/from the microcontroller via I2C, or SPI.

The TCA9555RGER I/O expander can be connected to both digital and analog signals. The expander can be connected directly to a digital signal and indicates the logic State of the signal, or it can be used to buffer an analog signal from the analog-to-digital converter (ADC) in order to reduce noise and interference. Moreover, it can be used for motor control and for controlling external latches and relays.

The TCA9555RGER is a very advantageous device as it supports multiple power modes, such as low-power mode, standby mode and normal operating mode.
