Tantalum Capacitors

Tantalum capacitors are small passive components used in electronic circuits to store energy. The most common type of capacitor is the electrolytic capacitor, which uses an oxide coating as a dielectric to separate two conducting plates. Tantalum capacitors are a subgroup of electrolytic capacitors, and are notable for their higher capacitance values and smaller size compared to other types of capacitors.

Working Principle

A tantalum capacitor has two pairs of electrodes separated by a layer of tantalum pentoxide (Ta2O5) as the dielectric material. The positive electrode is composed of an anode made from tantalum metal, while the negative electrode is a conductive polymer or manganese dioxide.

When a voltage is applied across the terminals, electrons flow from the anode to the cathode, through the organic cathode material, generating an electric field which accumulates charge on the anode. The amount of charge, or capacitance, is determined by the area of the electrodes and the thickness of the dielectric layer. As the electric field increases, the anode becomes increasingly positively charged and the cathode becomes increasingly negatively charged.

The capacitance of the device is determined by the ratio of the area of the plates to the thickness of the dielectric. Since tantalum capacitors are normally polarized, with positive and negative electrodes, if the polarity of the voltage applied is reversed, the device may suffer irreversible damage.
