TEA1506T/N1,518 is a 3W off-line Quasi-Resonant switching circuit used to generate low cost and low stand-by power supplies with few external components. It is designed to minimize the number of external components and reduce the external circuit design effort. The IC also provides several protection features such as OVP, OCP, and over-temperature as well as low power consumption in stand-by. The built-in Burst Mode Flyback controller is optimized for the best efficiency, but it can be correctly operated with no load.The circuit operates in fixed frequency burst mode, providing high energy efficiency (up to 80 %). The flyback converter provides primary-side control solutions to reduce the total system cost and to reduce the volume of components on the PCB. The quasi-resonant oscillator frequency varies from 18 kHz to 70kHz depending of the peak current of the primary side MOSFET switching.TEA1506T/N1,518 is a high-performance flyback converter circuit with built-in controller and driver that can operate with wide input voltage range and low stand-by power consumption. It is suitable for driving power inductors of up to 3W with low stand-by current consumption, protected against overloads and short circuits.It can be used in AC/DC converter applications such as LED lighting, notebook computer adapters, cellular phone chargers, TV adapters and other off-line power systems. The elimination of the external frequency compensator, optocouplers and synchronization components makes the circuit simple, compact and efficient. The TEA1506T/N1,518 provides load current regulation across a wide line range, low ripple, tight output voltage regulation and good line regulation, suitable for low input voltage range and low number components.The operating principle of the TEA1506T/N1,518 can be described as follows. When the line voltage rises above the internal reference voltage of the IC, the oscillator turns on and the primary MOSFET begins to conduct. The energy needed to turn on the primary MOSFET is supplied from the line through a current sense resistor.When the voltage across the primary winding is at its maximum level, the primary MOSFET is turned off and the drain voltage of the MOSFET can be used to set the peak current of the resonant current flowing through the secondary side of the transformer. The MOSFET is then turned off when the resonant current reaches its peak, to complete the switching cycle.The core of the IC is the quasi-resonant and burst mode regulation circuit. The burst mode control circuit provides constant and stable frequency switching while reducing the stand-by power consumption to almost zero. The quasi-resonant mode allows the circuit to operate in a wide input voltage range while keeping the output power and ripple constant.The circuit provides protection functions such as over voltage, over current, over temperature and short circuit protection, making it suitable for a wide range of off-line applications.In conclusion, TEA1506T/N1,518 is a 3W off-line Quasi-Resonant switching circuit offering low stand-by power consumption, few external components, good efficiency and many built-in protection features. It is suitable for AC/DC converters, offline switchers and other applications. It can be used to generate low cost and low stand-by power supplies.
